BLACK DIAMOND® FEATURES

anti-pry tabs

The Black Diamond® Anti-Pry Tabs are made to stop the bolts from moving past a certain point during a pry attack. During a pry attack the bolts will bend and without any Anti-Pry Tabs will continue to bend until they are broken away from the inner door frame. The Anti-Pry Tabs on a Black Diamond® safe stop the movement of the bolts. When the bolt begins to bend the Anti-Pry Tab attached to the back end of the bolt works will make contact with the door and effectively stop any further movement of the bolts. Effectively stopping a pry attack. Black Diamond® Safes have the Anti-Pry Tabs attached to the bolt works on each end of the interior bolt works. The vertical length of the door is where it is most vulnerable to pry attack and that is where we place the Anti-Pry Tabs on a Black Diamond® safe.

slip clutch

The Black Diamond® Slip Clutch design is another security feature that isn't found on many safes in it's price range. The Slip Clutch essentially slips out of gear when the Handles are being forced in the opposite direction of the main functionality of the safe. Without a Slip Clutch, the handles could be force-ably maneuvered to then break the inner bolt works of the door and allow the bolts that secure the door to fall away or be pushed out of the way to gain access to the safe. With the addition of the Slip Clutch the inner bolt works are safe from this kind of attack. The Slip Clutch effectively "slips" out of gear and make a full rotation to "slip" back into gear, without any damage to the safe taking place. This is another way Dakota Safe Company can offer the most secure safe in it's market with the Black Diamond® line of safes.

re-locker

Black Diamond® safes utilizes a Re-Locker System in each and every safe. The Re-locker System works by incorporating a plate of hardened steel in front of the lock assembly. This steel plate will chew up a drill bit to help slow down the process of a drill attack on the safe. Once the drill eventually makes it through there is still the matter of the Re-Locker pin. Once drilled the spring loaded pin will engage and lock the bolt works into place. Essentially a secondary lock that engages during a drill attack and thus properly named a Re-Locker System. Black Diamond® safes provide several layers of security into the construction of each door design. This just helps make a Black Diamond® safe one of the most secure safes in its class.

Bolt Works

Black Diamond® safes employ a 3 Way Bolt Works system into each size of safe built. We like to refer to these bolt works as "Active". The 3 Way Bolt Works are simply named after how they work. Each side of the door has its own set of bolts that are actively engaged by turning the handles on the front of the safe which engages the inner bolt works that simultaneously turns each mechanism moving the bolts in and out of the door and door frame. The bolts on the hinge side of the door are dead bolts and thus are in active making this door a 3 way active bolt works. The "Active" phrase refers to the fact all the bolts on each side of the door "move". On lower range safes, the hinge side of the door only had dead bolts which are inactive. The 3 Way Active Bolt Works on a Black Diamond® safe is just another level of security that we offer.

1.5" Bolts

Black Diamond® safe use massive 1.5" hardened steel bolts to secure their safes. Many safes use smaller bolts or no bolts at all and instead use flat pieces of metal to keep their door secure. The 1.5" hardened steel bolts on a Black Diamond® safe are make help make the door more secure and pry resistant.

The Black Diamond® safes incorporate up to 18 - 3 way active bolts around the door of the BD42 and no less than 14 on all other safes with the exception of the BD28 which has 12. Dead bolts are used to secure the hinge side of each Black Diamond® Safe. The thicker the bolts and the more bolts that are used in the construction of the door, the better. Black Diamond® safes prove that the more secure the door the more security you will have for your valuables.

External Hinges

Black Diamond® safes ads functionality to each safe with the addition of external hinges. The Hinges themselves are fully welded to the body and door giving it a better sense of quality. Each hinge comes complete with a top and bottom hinge cap for a more complete look. These hinge caps match the black chrome used on all the hardware on the front of the safe. The External Hinges on the Black Diamond® safe allows for a complete 180° degree opening of the door. This allows an ease of access you will not get with a 90° degree open door. The external hinges play no part in the overall security of the safe, just ease of opening.

Black Chrome

Dakota Safe Company has had its fair share of ups and downs when it comes to the look of our safes. The overall look of the safe needed to be just as appealing as the inner working and security of the safe. We decided to go with an all Black Chrome Hardware set on the Dakota and Black Diamond® safes. Black Chrome has proven to be one of the most appealing and popular looks on most Safes. The Dakota safes feature a five spoke Black Chrome handle and Combination dial. The hinge caps are also black chrome to help bring the whole look together. You can't go wrong with a Black Chrome Hardware package on your safe. Dakota Safe Company gives you this luxury look at an affordable price.

Manual Lock

The line of Black Diamond® safes feature a Basic Combination Lock in its design. Each Black Diamond® safe comes standard with a mechanical lock. The advantage of having a combination lock over and electronic lock is simple. A mechanical lock will never to have the batteries replaced. An electronic lock can easily replace the mechanical lock with the help of a Lock Smith. The same can be said about changing the combination on your mechanical lock, with the help of a Lock Smith. Each safe will have it's own serial number that will conencide with the combination to each safe. Dakota Safe Company keeps these combinations and serial numbers locked up in a guarded location to use in case, for some reason, the owner of the safe looses the combination. Once the combination has been changed from it's original factory setting or replaced with an electronic lock, the abiliy of Dakota Safe Company to help get into a safe ends.

Door Organizer

The Dakota and Black Diamond® line of safes all include a fully installed Door Organizer on the interior door panel of each safe they build. Each Door Organizer is made of durable nylon and is fully attached to the inner door panel and fastened to the board with screws and screw caps for an added level of completeness. Each size of safe will differ in the number of pockets it will have available for your storage needs. Each will offer a number of pistol pockets, large zipper bag, open mesh bag and large document bag. These door organizer systems provide an extra amount of usable space to stretch out the, at times, limited space that is already available and gives you the means to organize your items in an even better fashion.

Shelf Support

A commonly overlooked issue with most safes is Shelf Support. Most shelving on Safes is made of particle board covered in a material. The underlying material has a problem of bowing out of shape when kept under constant pressure. Ammunition and guns can be very heavy in combination and bend your shelf over time. Dakota Safe Company installs steel under shelf supports on all their Dakota and Black Diamond® Safes. The steel support fits on the the existing shelf support system and provides a never wavering amount of strength to the shelf, giving it the added capacity to hold more weight indefinitely. This feature is more important than most would think, but those of you who have had shelves with out this type of support you will know the result all to well. This feature comes standard on all shelves that span the full length of the safe. With this kind of feature your safe will hold more than you would have thought possible before.

Modular Interior

Every Black Diamond® safe comes standard with Gray carpet interior. Experience has shown that this is the most appealing type of carpet to have in the interior of our safes. While helping keep the price of our safes at a lower price point it also is appealing and versatile.

The interior on the Dakota and Black Diamond® safes are also, what we like to refer to as, Modular. The Modular Interior of our safes means that they are customizable. Each safe will come with adjustable shelving heights. The Gun Storage capacity of your safe can double by utilizing each gun rack for guns. Each safe provides enough shelves to make the racks on the wall side of the safe into three separate shelves. The capacity and use of your shelves are completely up to your and your taste. We just make it possible for you to expand the interior as you see fit.

Exterior Finish

The exterior of all Black Diamond® safe products have a durable textured powder coat finish that is sure to last the test of time. Powder coating is a type of coating that is applied as a free-flowing, dry powder. Powder coating creates a hard finish that is tougher than conventional paint. The Black Diamond® series feature a rich "Black Silver Vein" powder coat finish. This is the only color available with the Black Diamond® series of safes. If by chance you scratch or gouge your powder coat finish we can provide touch up paint available (at an extra cost). The longevity of your safes exterior will be extended significantly with a powder coat finish as apposed to a regular paint job which is subject to more blemishes and noticable sratching. Enjoy the durability of a powder coat finish on your Black Diamond® safe.

Door Seal

The Black Diamond® series incorporates a Palusol® in-tumescent fire seal, which is a sodium silicate material surrounded in a thermoplastic profile. When exposed to heat Palusol® expands with the development of a fine-porous, compression resistant, non-combustible seal creating a foaming pressure up to 5 times its thickness. This foam then fills joints and gaps preventing the penetration of fire and/or smoke for up to 60 minutes with evaporating water producing an additional cooling effect.

11 gauge body

The security of every gun safe comes down to two things, the door and the steel in the body of the safe. The Black Diamond® Line of safes uses a continuously welded body system made from 11 gauge steel. This thickness of steel has proven time and again to be a durable, secure choice for building a safe at this price point. It is common knowledge that safes can be built from many thicknesses of steel and the thicker the steel the more the price will go up. This will always be the case. Black Diamond® safes provide 11 gauge steel to secure your valuables and protect against theft.

continuous welds

The welds on Black Diamond® safe is one of the most important features. Most mid range safes use only spot welds and bondo to hold their safes together. You can read and watch many videos showing how easy it is to break open a safe with only a hand sledge. Dakota Safe Company puts particular attention to detail in the construction of the Black Diamond® safes. Each safe features a fully continuous welded body. Each plate of steel welded together with one solid welded bead to join each plate at the seams and effectively make them one solid piece of steel. The proof is in the welds and Black Diamond® safes sport proof of fully continuous welds in every safe they build.

Roll Form Door

Black Diamond® safes utilize a roll form door design. The words "roll form" says it all. The door on a Black Diamond® safe is one sheet of 11 gauge steel that is bent/rolled into the shape of the door that will contain the interior components of the door. The fire board is contained within the roll form of the door to help maximize space and protection from fire. To add to the rigidity of the door a 11 gauge steel stiffener plate is added to a significant portion of the doors total dimensions. This keeps the door from wobbling and adding extra security and rigidity to the overall design of the door. The security of any gun safe comes down to to a few significant features and the rigidity of the door is paramount. The Black Diamond® safe series accomplishes this task with their roll formed door design.

Fire Rating

There are many safes out there that claim to be fire "proof". There is no such thing. The most any safe can do is "Resist" fire as long as it can. Many features on the Black Diamond® line of safes helps do just that. Included in the Black Diamond® safe construction is the inclusion of fire material in the body and a roll form door which contains more fire material along with the inner door panel and a Palusol Heat seal. All of these features combine to give the Black Diamond® an impressive 75 minute at 1250° degree fire rating. Dakota Safe Company tests the fire "Resistance" of the Black Diamond® safes by actually burning up a safe to see what the "FAIL" point is on the safe. This is how we determine the Fire Rating of our safes.
